The latest Age of Empires II Definitive Edition update 188329 is a stability-focused patch aimed at crashes, out-of-sync problems and smaller gameplay and interface issues. Here is a rundown of what changed, in the order the official notes cover it.

What Update 188329 Changes in Age of Empires II: DE

This update is built around stability, gameplay fixes and fine tuning across core systems and recent content. The main highlights include fixes for several crashes and out-of-sync issues, a bug where garrisoned units were killed when their building was destroyed, some exploits and gameplay bugs, and a slowdown affecting large groups of units moving around obstructions.

Stability and Performance Fixes: Crashes and Out of Sync Issues

  • An out-of-sync issue tied to box formation has been fixed.
  • Replays using Reveal Map set to “Explored” or “All Visible” no longer go out of sync.
  • The game no longer becomes unresponsive for a few seconds after the map finishes loading and before the match starts, a problem that was more noticeable on larger maps with more players.
  • A crash when loading into the Stranded map has been fixed.
  • A crash in scenarios using the Lock Civ option with the civilization set to Random has been resolved.
  • Some rare crashes involving custom content such as mods and scenarios have been fixed.

UI and Hotkey Improvements

  • In-game fonts that looked lower quality, especially at higher resolutions, have been fixed.
  • The bonus attack from the Hamask technology now appears in the UI even when the unit isn’t attacking.
  • A stray “0” that appeared before Text to Speech chat messages has been removed.
  • A missing mute button has been added so you can mute your own audio in Multiplayer lobbies.
  • Hulks and Transport Ships no longer share the same default hotkey in the Classic Hotkeys profile.

Multiplayer and Matchmaking Fixes

Lobbies can once again be found when searching by Game ID. A Matchmaking Error that appeared when trying to queue with a full party has also been fixed.

Steam Achievements and PlayStation 5 Changes

On Steam, achievements are now grouped by the DLC they belong to, so unlock progress is counted individually for each one. On PlayStation 5, a bug that stopped players from restoring a saved multiplayer game has been fixed.

The notes present this as only a small taste of the update. The complete list is available on the official Age of Empires blog, and the team says the list is subject to change and is not a comprehensive record of every known issue. Players can discuss the update on the official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition forum or join the Age of Empires Official Discord.
